WHAT’S NEWS…?

What a difference 6 years makes!

From Proof of Concept in 2019 to ParaNordic World Cup in 2024 and, for two of the team, the Paralympics in 2026.

In 2017, it was obvious to us that Biathlon would be an excellent recovery vehicle for injured service personnel and veterans. In 2019, Mark Daniels became the ADF’s first-ever parabiathlete and Australia’s first-ever lower limb amputee to compete in the sport. We then attracted Matt Brumby – Australia’s first-ever sitskier – from Ironman Paratriathlon, and Taryn Dickens – Australia’s first-ever VI parabiathlete – from Track Cycling, into the parabiathlon fold. Curtis and Heather Wiederkher guided Taryn in her early competitions before Taryn sent Dave Miln our way; with Matt loaning his spare sitski and providing early coaching to Dave. With no elite pathway existing in Australia until last year, VESPA had to step into the gap, greatly assisted by Disabled Wintersport Australia, to support the star athletes from 2021-2024. Many thanks to Biathlon Australia and Snow Australia for taking them on to the World Paranordic events and to Paralympics Australia for supporting their attempts at Paralympian status.

Matt Brumby Heads to Canada Seeking World Cup Points and Paralympic Qualification

16 Nov 25

After an early and false start on Saturday and a frustrating day chasing various organisations to ensure he met all requirements, Matt and Willow braved a very late cancellation of his flight and are now in Canmore.

His pre-season training also provided frustration, due to a fractured sternum taking a 3-month bite out of his training regime.

Nevertheless, and thanks to the fantastic people at the South Australia Sports Institute (SASI), he is now in good shape to pull out all the stops to qualify for Milano/Cortina ’26.

Australian Sports Medal for our Founder

For efforts as Team Australia’s Nordic Lead at the 2025 Invictus Games in Vancouver/Whistler.

Matt Brumby earns Australian places at 2026 Winter Paralympics!

3 Jun 25

Following his joining James Millar onto the World Cup honour board for Australia, it was fantastic to see the efforts of our main man Matty in the 2024/25 Para World Cup secure Australia a place at Milano/Cortina ’26!

See his Paralympics Australia bio here.

Outstanding shift from Team Aus Nordic Skiers at Invictus Games 2025

11 Feb 25

Adam Jackson (pictured) led the team in a fantastic effort by all 11 skiers. The course was short but enough of a challenge for novices who had only skied on rollers until the single practice day allotted. The nature of the games meant only a short exposure to the sport in its truest form, though the high value of snow sports in veteran wellbeing was abundantly clear.

Team Australia’s Invictus Games Nordic Skiing team training a tremendous success at Camps 2 and 3

9 Dec 24

So, that’s a wrap on the pre-games training camps at the Australian Institute of Sports, with another 11 serving or veteran personnel introduced to the off-snow (for now) version of the greatest sport in the world; this time by the ADF Adaptive Sports Program and Invictus Games 2025, with Curtis leading the nordic training in August and December, with the most tremendous assistance from ADF Biathlon President (pictured, with Alex and Erin Hale), several other ADF Biathlon coaches, including our own Heather Weiderkehr (nee Bundy) and a loan of a Disabled Wintersport Australia sitski.

Next stop: Whistler, BC!

Matt Brumby: Australia’s first ever sitski Parabiathlete to compete in the World Cup!

12 Dec 24

VESPA parabiathlete Matt Brumby made another pioneering leap in the world of paranordic, by becoming the first Australian in history to compete in the IBU Parabiathlon World Cup in a sitski. He finished the 7.5km Sprint with no falls, 0+2 shoot, along with a modest but improved time over his start in the Intercontinental race in Sweden the week before.

He now heads to Val di Femme, Italy, for Round 2 – at the venue set to host the Winter Paralympic Nordic Skiing events in 2026.

Matt Brumby, Australia’s male champion, named in Biathlon Australia’s national Parabiathlon team

25 Sep 24

Absolutely no surprise to see our man Matty Brumby named in the Australian team to attack the IBU World circuit this year. Matt joins Australia’s young able-bodied biathletes, including two daughters of his associate coach, Darcy and Danika Moreton, along with Australia’s first-ever visually impaired parabiathlete, Taryn Dickens. Congratulations to all, we know you’ll do the nation proud.

Breaking: Curtis “Not dead…” at ADF Biathlon Championships

Curt: Not dead.

17 Aug 24

Despite how it looks, he’s okay, everybody! He was just having a Lima-Lima-Delta (little lie-down) after having skied Classic-style for a whole 5km at the ADF Biathlon Championships.

Shortly after this was taken, Curt was heard to gasp; “Where are my skates! Where are my skates!” before falling asleep during the team meeting at the Navy Biathlon Lodge

VESPA founder employed as Nordic Lead for Team Australia at 2025 Invictus Games

Our founder with then Australia's #1 female biathlete, Jill Colebourn

12 Aug 24

Excited to announce that our Founding Director has been employed by the ADF Adaptive Sports Program as Nordic Lead for the next Invictus Games at Whistler, Canada, in February.

Actually applying unsuccessfully as a participant, the Head Coach recognised his credentials and made the appointment happen.

IBU take on Parabiathlon! This changes everything

31 Jul 24

The International Biathlon Union taking over governance of parabiathlon is a game-changer. Following suit, our own federation, Biathlon Australia, has taken on VESPA parabiathlete Matt Brumby and the athlete we tempted away from Track Cycling, Taryn Dickens – who has been invited to this camp. Fantastic stuff!

VESPA’s Inaugural Snow & Wellbeing Camp

Aug 23

Despite the poor snow conditions, the British Parabiathlon unit visited Australia for cross-pollination and to run a training camp for our athletes. British Biathlon Olympic team manager and World Cup Biathlete in his own right, Simon Allanson, along with Paralympian biathlete Steve Arnold spent 3 weeks with Matt Brumby and Taryn Dickens at Falls Creek, in order to consolidate the teachings of World ParaNordic guru, Kaspar Wirz last year.

The visit was curtailed in order that the poor snow conditions didn’t affect Steve’s World Cup training, but the effect of the Brits’ visit was huge, particularly for sit-skier Matt Brumby.

VESPA to host Australian ParaNordic Elite Training Pathway Capability-building Event

VESPA are stoked to announce we will host Snow Australia and the British World ParaNordic World Cup Team delegates in an elite Parabiathlon management & training pollination event at Falls Creek, 4-21 August 23. The brainchild of our Parabiathlete Matt Brumby, the British have offered to share their expertise in elite training pathway with Australian ParaNordic Authorities. This will involve input from Paralympians, Olympians, World Cup Coaches and Managers, and has to be the most exciting event in Australian Parabiathlon History!

Matt Brumby in Colorado with Brits, ‘mericans, a Columbian, Nigerians, Ukrainians…

20 Mar 23

The end of month saw Matt Brumby attend the British Armed Forces ParaSnowsports Team (AFPST) camp at Winterpark, Colorado, as part of a collaboration between the AFPST and the Invictus Foundation. Here’s a beautifully crafted video from a great friend of the AFPST, John Holden.

New Sit-ski frame and Rollerski mountain board inbound!

1 March 23

We are delighted to have purchased this mountain board, fitted for a sit-ski frame, from Spokes ‘n Motion of Denver Colorado; using funds from Veterans SA’s Seed-funding grant, awarded to VESPA last year. Spokes ‘n Motion manufactured the sit-ski frames for the Chinese Winter Paralympic Team for the Beijing games last year. Just awaiting finalisation of funding for the sitski frame from another organisation and we’ll have our man Matt Brumby on the overseas circuit.

VESPA’s Matt Brumby; winner of the 2022 Sir Roden Cutler award

22 September 22

On a sparkling night in Sydney (is there any other kind?), The Primary Club of Australia honoured our Parabiathlete Matt Brumby as overall winner of the Sir Roden Cutler award, presented by ex-Australian Test Cricket Captain and all-round legend Mark Taylor. Matt was “…one of five highly qualified candidates, who all deserve to be recognised for their various contributions to their sport, and who inspire thousands of others to surmount challenges and give life a go! Each finalist will received a Sir Roden Cutler Award Finalist Medal, as well as a $5,000 grant for sporting and recreational facilities for the sports charity of their choosing.” (Primary Club Australia, 2022).

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Matt-lad!

Whoa-whoa-wee-whoa! We’ve got a rollerski treadmill… in Hobart!

23 September 22

Thanks to a tip-off from Taryn, Curtis has been liaising with the most wonderful man, a Sports Therapist and Ecuadorian Cross-country skier in Tasmania called Klaus Jungbluth, in their efforts to bring a treadmill to Adelaide for Matt Brumby et al to train on and perfect their positioning and technique. Klaus is leaving Australia and went above and beyond in both actions and flexibility, not only overseeing the delivery of the treadmill to a temporary destination, but also allowing us credit to pay him as we can afford. An absolute gentleman and bon-oueff circullaire, we wish Klaus all the very best for his return home.

Any logisticians or delivery types who have 3x3x1m space on a wagon leaving Hobart for the mainland we might use, please?

End of the snow season; what next for our athletes?

12 September 22

As the VESPA crew returned to our Adelaide and Canberra bases, tired but buzzing after a fantastic first snow-season, our attention turns to the off-snow events of The Australian summer.

Or does it? Watch this space for news of what is hopefully developing between VESPA and our supporters & partners…

VESPA Athletes and Guides attend the second DWA ParaNordic Guide Camp at Perisher

9 September 22

Our magnificent partners and trailblazers in Australian ParaNordic Skiing DWA held a follow-on Guide camp at Perisher NSW, which was our last on-snow event of The Australian season. Taryn, Matt, Heather and Curtis joined the DWA event, which culminated in Assistance Mushers Willow and Gigi going head-to-head at the Nordic Bowl – with Taryn Dickens and Biathlete & Adaptive Guide Julia Smusz at the controls. Check the unshakable strength of Taryn at 0.28, but it wasn’t enough to stop Willow and Julia from claiming the spoils and making Matt proud.

See our Facebook and Insta pages for more pictures.

18km? Pah! How about we go big or go home? Taryn hits the Hoppet 42km!

27 August 22

Not content with completing the 18km Kosciusko Tour at Perisher after a few hours skiing under her belt, Taryn went one – well, twenty-four better, with the Kangaroo Hoppet 42km XC Ski Race; part of the World Loppet Series, at Falls Creek, VIC. Another beautiful day transformed into a battle against both worsening snow conditions and the slowest classic skis… IN THE WORLD! True to form, her technique and determination never faltered and she completed the race with her “Number 2” Guide Curtis who, after loafing for the first 25kms, took over from the main girl Heather Bundy, allowing her to stretch her legs in an attempt to allow Navy to catch the eventual winners RAAF in the ADF race. Though that wasn’t to be, Taryn gloriously double-poled her way down the final hill (yes, you read that right!) to the finish line, where the photo was captured.

Taryn Dickens VO2 Max at University of Canberra; thanks to the IPP [now WAVES]

23 August 22

Our partners at Uni SA’s sports science providers the Invictus Pathways Program (IPP) initial collaboration with University of Canberra led to our VI biathlete and Masters Track Cyclist National Team Champion Taryn Dickens completing her first-ever VO2 Max testing. This has been a goal of hers for some time; immense thanks to Billy Mason at UC, to Jason Roberts and Ashlee Munro at IPP, and to Miranda Van Hooff and Ian Drayton for their work at the executive level at MESHA and UC respectively.

See our Facebook and Insta pages for more pictures.

VESPA Coach and ParaNordic Guide shines at the ADF and National Biathlon Championships

13 August 22

Heather Bundy (right), our inimitable ParaNordic Guide, Coach and APSI Nordic Ski Instructor, went gathering titles and medals this month, with unmatched performance to take the Navy Women’s Champion and ADF Women’s Champion titles, then topping it off with a bronze in the Biathlon Australia National Women’s Masters.

Well done to Heather and congratulations to the champion, Lynne-Marie Cullen and the deserving Rachael McKay; silver medallist and trusted advisor to both Navy and VESPA biathletes.

Phot: Paul Garai

VESPA pioneer again at the ADF Biathlon Championships.

6 August 22

Once again, VESPA have proven to be pioneers of parabiathlon in Australia, following up Mark Daniels as Aus’s first lower-limb amputee Parabiathlete in 2019 with the country’s first Visually Impaired Parabiathlete, Taryn Dickens, competing at the ADF Biathlon Championships “EXERCISE COOLSHOT 22” at Mt Hotham, VIC. Her classic ‘can-do’ attitude and continually improving technique also saw her skiing in Women’s Senior and Novice races and acquitting herself well in the process.

See our Facebook and Insta pages for more pictures and that video sequence of Taryn’s wonderful assistance dog, Gigi, shredding… ‘it’ on her first downhill!

Kosciusko 18km XC Ski Tour; after 2 days on snow!

30 August 22

Taryn Dickens (3rd left), our VI athlete, convinced her Coach that after one rollerski lesson and a two-day Women’s Development Camp at Mt Hotham that she should enter the Kosciusko 18km Ski Tour. In Navy livery and on a bluebird day at Perisher NSW, she duly delivered; completing the tour under direction from her Coach and Guide, Heather Bundy; also seen in Navy colours (2nd left).

Thanks to Bethany (right), the local GP, for skiing with us and keeping Curtis talking (loudly); until Taryn had a ‘quiet’ word!

And we’re off! Matt Brumby makes his mark at DWA Nordic Program Launch and Guide camp

1 July 22

Thanks to our tremendous partners at Disabled Wintersport Australia, VESPA athlete Matt Brumby and his assistance dog Willow began their journey toward his goal to better his performance as a Paratriathlete. Matt won his class in the last World Para-Ironman championships in Kona, Hawaii in 2019 and just missed out on the Rio Paralympics – having won the half-distance World Championship the same year. On a DWA Tessier sitski at Falls Creek, VIC, Matt also assisted DWA prospective Nordic Guides with the practicalities of the task, and under the guidance of World ParaNordic authority Kaspar Wirz of Canada; an ex-Military Policeman himself, and architect of a number of ParaNordic programs around the world.

Funding at last!!!! Thanks to a Government of South Australia grant

17 June 22

We got the news yesterday that those wonderful people at Veterans SA, a Government of South Australia organisation, have selected VESPA as recipients of their Seed Funding Grant. We submitted our bid right on the deadline, perfectly timed before our first athlete got on rollerskis. The boost this is going to give our athletes will be huge!

Matt Brumby, everybody!!!!!

2 May 2022

Stunning News: Matt Brumby, already a regular in the Green and Gold as an elite-status Australian ParaTriathlete, not to mention twice World Champion ParaIronman, has hung up his Speedos for the brand new challenge of Parabiathlon! In a short period where we thought things couldn’t get more exciting, Matt called us on Lenny Redrose’s recommendation, after confirming the need for a new challenge. Seen here in his Triathlon livery, and based in Adelaide, Matt is looking forward to thrashing himself around the slopes – though Victoria Racetrack may have to do in the very short-term!

Welcome Matt! Absolutely stoked to have you with us.

First Rollerski Lesson for VESPA athlete

1 May 2022

First Rollerski training session for a VESPA athlete; Taryn’s distant past on in-line skates proved useful, as she quickly picked up working on both Rollerskis and the more forgiving Skikes in Canberra this weekend. Many thanks to the fabulous Heather Bundy, our APSI Nordic Ski Instructor in the ACT, for making this happen.

Welcome Taryn Dickens – VI Athlete

23 March 2022

G’day Taryn!

Taryn Dickens, or “Squints” as she is affectionately known, has eagerly joined the VESPA crew. She comes to us as a National Masters Team Track-cycling Champion, with which she will continue; though she is now looking to begin Tandem riding by end of 2022 as well as learning to ski and shoot in the Visually Impaired classification. Based in Canberra, Taryn has begun skiing with a coach & prospective future guide, the wonderful Heather Bundy, in order to get ahead of the VI skiing game.

Welcome, Taryn!

VESPA Athlete Carries the Flag at Invictus Games 2022 Opening Ceremony

20 April 2022

Thrilled to see our adaptive athlete, “Tazzie” Pete Brown carrying the worlds most handsome national flag in the Opening Ceremony of the Invictus Games 2022 at Den Haag (The Hague), Holland. Go, ‘straya!

Farewell, but not goodbye, to Lenny

1 May 2022

This week, after witnessing a colossal team effort at the Invictus Games 2022 @ The Hague, Holland, VESPA parted with our first committed adaptive athlete, the incomparable Lenny Redrose (pictured left). We would be hugely sad to say ‘farewell’ but for the fact that he is leaving only to concentrate on Wheelchair Basketball; at which, the lad is an absolute ringer; and he left us with a very capable athlete to take his place – more on that later.

All the very best, Lenny; and probably see you on a podium somewhere soon!

First VESPA race and image wear design approved

The fabulous people at Paladin Sports have converted our designs into 1s & 0s and come up with a stunning prototype biathlon race and training top and a very handsome polo shirt.

Based on their cycling tops, long sleeves were added to a biathlon-suitable material which produced a livery to please our partners & supporters, and that our athletes can wear with pride while looking as awesome as they truly are; while the slimming flank design helps staff hide the COVID kilos.

A small initial batch of each were ordered in various sizes, self-funded but required to begin the push to get our organisation in the minds of our demographic and any would-be supporters, donors and athletes.

Initial stock will be used to kit out athletes, our fabulous Ambassador and our staff but repeat runs are expected, with items made available for order. All proceeds will be paid into our Q-Account at MESHA, with a view to funding follow-on orders.

If you would like to look great on snow, asphalt, Neveplast, generally just knocking around the bars & bazaars or even cycling (!), click below in order to clue us up on likely numbers for our next order. We will then contact you when more garments become available and advise of cost (likely to be around AU$100 for a race/training top and AU$50 for a polo).

We are thrilled to announce Australia’s #1 Female IBU World Cup Biathlete, Jill Colebourn as VESPA Ambassador

In 2019/20, Jill Wei Lin Colebourn became the first Australian representative to qualify for the biathlon World Cup for 20 years, and has continued to improve both her ski speed and overall results.

Jill is one of the brightest, welcoming souls you could wish to meet. A Mechatronics student at the University of Technology, Sydney, she is also always smiling, always happy to chat and proffer advice and is an inspiration to watch in training. I have seen many impressive performances in my time but I struggle to think of anything quite like being on the biathlon shooting range at Mount Hotham and seeing Jill being thrashed around the ski circuit by her coach, before sweeping into the range, dropping her ski poles, unslinging her rifle and, in the standing/unsupported position, drop all five targets in less than ten seconds – then re-setting her equipment and swishing out of the range on yet another lap of the circuit.

Welcome, Jill, we are incredibly proud to have you onboard!

VESPA are Australia’s representative at the World Para-Nordic Skiing organisation’s inaugural online international coaching event from Lillehammer, Norway.

Coffee and dim lighting were the order of the early morning, as I tuned-in to the WPNS COVID-friendly event from Lillehammer. Many thanks to Elke Gundermann at the Paralympic organisation for the invite and to Per Erik Mæhlem and Jan Christian Bjørn particularly, for the wealth of information passed on.

Meet Mark Daniels: Australia’s first lower limb competitive Parabiathlete

Having been in our founder’s mind since his first Navy Biathlon event, the 2019 ADF Biathlon Championships gave the opportunity for a proof-of-concept for veteran parabiathlon. We were told that Mark was Australia’s first-ever parabiathlete; he was not, as that honour remains with James Millar, who self-funded his way to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Paralympics. Nevertheless, this proved a point (not just that he should have been in a sitski – we couldn’t afford it though) and thanks to Navy Sport and the ADF Adaptive Sports Program for funding Mark’s efforts. Kudos also to Paul Garai, for a very decent photobomb 😉
